Make EFI Partition Bootable

QUARK’s user interface does not support EFI partitions. If you have an EFI partition, part of a BMR (Bare Metal Restore) using QUARK must be performed manually.

To make EFI partition bootable:

1.	Check the size of EFI system partition (ESP) and Microsoft reserved partition (MSR), and record this information from your original PN

> diskpart > sel disk 0 > list part

Note:  Optionally, you can retrieve the same information from the saved image size (ESP.dat).

Example:

Partition 1, system partition, 100M Partition 2, Reserved partition, 128M Partition 3, Primary partition, 97G

2.	Back up PN to onQ repository. Refer to Initiate immediate backups.

The PN's EFI partition (current) will be saved as C:\Program Files\Quorum\usr\ESP.dat.

3.	Prepare the restore target partitions on GPT disk:

a.	If you are using the same hardware but replacing the drives, ensure that the original RAID disk is removed and recreated with a new set of disks.

b.	Reboot the machine and set the system to use BIOS-mode boot.

c.	Change to BIOS-mode boot.

d.	Boot the restore target with the QUARK USB drive.

Do the following:

> diskpart > sel disk 0 > clean > covert GPT

e.	Remove any automatically created partition, if any.

> sel part 1 > del part override

f.	Create an EFI system partition (ESP), MSR partition, and C volume in sequence.

The volume sizes of ESP and MSR must match the sizes on the original PN according to Microsoft’s documentation. The size of C volume can be any size that is able to accommodate the restored files on the C volume.

> sel disk 0 > create part efi size=100

The newly created ESP size must be equal to or larger than saved ESP image (ESP.dat).

> format fs=fat32 quick > create part msr size=128

g.	Use QUARK to add C volume (required size) without checking the active option.

4.	Perform BMR on all protected volume as usual. After the data transfer is complete as indicated by onQ, perform the rest of the steps below before rebooting the newly restored server.

5.	Restore the saved EFI partition from the C volume to the EFI partition on RN’s GPT disk.

> diskpart.exe > sel disk 0 > sel partition 1

a.	Assign the EFI partition to an available disk letter.

> assign letter=p

b.	Restore the saved ESP image.

> B:\BCV\qRestorePart.exe c:\Program Files\Quorum\usr\ESP.dat P:

6.	Fix BCD store to point to new device path:

a.	Use Bcdedit to browse the ESP’s BCD store, then fix the device/osdevice path.

b.	Look for the device or osdevice parameter for unknown or a missing path parameter.

> Bcdedit /store p:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD /enum all

c.	Set the device to the drive letter for the EFI System Partition (ESP).

> Bcdedit /store P:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD\ /set {bootmgr} device partition=p:

d.	Ensure that the Boot Loader device and osdevice settings point to the correct drive letter for the operating system partition.

•	Where the operating system device letter is usually C:\.

•	Where ID GUID is the Windows Boot loader identifier. See output from Step b.

> Bcdedit /store p:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD /set {<ID GUID>} device partition=C: > Bcdedit /store p:\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\BCD /set {<ID GUID>} osdevice partition=C:

e.	(Optional) Check for any other unknown device path. Update the value to partition=p: or partition=c, according to its correctly assigned driver letter. The same fix can be applied to the multi-boot BCD set up as well.

7.	Reboot machine and hit F2 to switch back to EFI-boot mode. Use diskpat to verify the system partition is pointed to ESP.
