Back up and restore Oracle 11g database

The following procedure walks you through how to restore an Oracle 11g database on a Linux Recovery Node using example scripts and the Oracle Tool Kit. These scripts execute a hot backup of your Oracle database using RMAN and then recover the Oracle database onto the RN.

To install the RMAN scripts:

This procedure works for Linux 6.2 RNs, though this procedure should also work on other os versions.

1.	Install Oracle Tool Kit on the PN.

This procedure works with version 1_0_2_1_5, though this procedure should also work on later OTK versions. For this version, OTK was installed in the following locations:

•	/opt/oracle

•	/opt/oracle/admin/dev

•	/opt/oracle/otk

2.	Download the example scripts.

3.	On the Linux PN that’s running Oracle 11g database, copy the following scripts to /opt/quorum/bin:

•	pre_snap.sh

•	post_snap.sh

•	armutil.sh

•	ora_00_config.sh

•	ora_02_catalog.sh

•	ora_05_restore.sh

•	ora_01_util.sh

•	ora_03_pre.sh

Note:  The comments at top of each script explain the purpose of each script.

4.	Copy the armSender and vmmonCtl from x64 or i386 folder (depending upon the PN’s architecture) to /opt/quorum/bin on the Linux PN that’s running Oracle 11g database.

The armSender and vmmonCtl are tools to communicate status to the onQ Manager.

5.	Log on to the HA Appliance’s onQ Portal.

6.	Stop protection.

7.	From the PROTECTION CONFIG tab, select the PN that’s running Oracle 11g database, then MODIFY > ADVANCED.

8.	Enable the pre snapshot scripts on that PN by selecting the Execute Pre Snapshot script?: Yes radio button.

To test the scripts:

1.	Load some known data into the Oracle database (for example in DEV catalog).

2.	Perform backup of the PN.

The Event log displays the following messages as onQ builds the RN:

•	Pre-snapshot command returned: rman backup succeeded (as coded in pre_snap.sh), if rman backup passes.

•	Pre-snapshot command returned: rman backup failed, see /tmp/ora_03_pre.out (as coded in pre_snap.sh), if rman backup fails.

3.	Restore the database using the procedure below.

To restore an Oracle 11g database:

This procedure works for Linux 6.2 RNs, though this procedure should also work on other os versions.

1.	Start the Recovery Node in production mode, after the RN build completes.

2.	On the RN, run the recovery script as Oracle user to restore the Oracle database onto the RN:

# su - oracle # ora_05_restore.sh

3.	Verify that the RN’s Oracle database shows the expected data.
